Lou Holtz, back in 1986, decided that his Notre Dame football players needed a bit of inspiration as they took to the field. Holtz had a sign crafted that read, "Play Like a Champion Today." The sign, bright gold with dark blue lettering, was positioned above a stairway outside the Notre Dame locker room, and beneath another, larger sign listing all of the Fighting Irish's national championships. And soon a tradition emerged: players tapped the "Play Like a Champion Today" sign for luck on the way to the field. Charlie Weis, a 1978 University of Notre Dame graduate and owner of four Super Bowl champion rings as products of a stellar 15-season career as a National Football League assistant, was named the 28th head football coach of the Fighting Irish in 2004.
