Lou Holtz, back in 1986, decided that his Notre Dame football players needed a bit of inspiration as they took to the field. So, borrowing a slogan from his friend and fellow coach, Gerry Faust, Holtz had a sign crafted that read, "Play Like a Champion Today." The sign, bright gold with dark blue lettering, was positioned above a stairway outside the Notre Dame locker room, and beneath another, larger sign listing all of the Fighting Irish's national championships. And soon a tradition emerged: players tapped the "Play Like a Champion Today" sign for luck on the way to the field. Joe Theismann had a decision to make. Back in 1971, after coming in second in that year's Heisman Trophy vote, the Notre Dame QB was drafted by the Minnesota Twins, who took him as a shortstop, and the Miami Dolphins, who selected him with the 99th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Theismann turned down both options and instead played QB for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Tony Rice entered Notre Dame in 1986 and was the crown jewel in Lou Holtz's first recruiting class. In 1987, Tony Rice became the starting quarterback for Notre Dame.
