Earl Campbell, a 5-11, 232-pound ball-carrying dynamo from the University of Texas, joined the Houston Oilers as the first player taken in the 1978 National Football League Draft. The first player to earn All-Southwest Conference honors four years, Campbell was a consensus All-America and the Heisman Trophy winner in 1977. Born March 29, 1955, in Tyler, Texas, Campbell took the NFL by storm right from the very start. In 1978, he was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player, All-Pro, and Rookie of the Year. He won the league rushing championship with 1,450 yards and was named to the AFC Pro Bowl squad. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991. Terrell Davis, a sixth-round draft pick by the Denver Broncos in 1995, increased his season rushing yardage in each of his first four pro seasons. After rushing for 1,117 yards as a rookie, he gained 1,538 yards during his second season and 1,750 yards in this third year. In 1998, he "broke the bank", as he became just the fourth player in history to eclipse the 2,000-yard barrier. Davis finished the season with a total of 2,008 yards rushing. More significant, however, is that his yardage output allowed him to become just the third player in NFL history to reach the 1,000-yard mark in seven games. In doing so, Davis put his name alongside two Hall of Fame running backs, Jim Brown (1958) and O.J. Simpson (1973 and 1975) as the only runners to reach the 1000-yard milestone in seven games.
